IT’S ALMOST OFFICIAL: ST. PETE’S MAIN LIBRARY TO BE RENAMED AFTER OBAMA

The library will also undergo a multi-million dollar renovation.

ST. PETERSBURG – City council member today (April 5) unanimously gave tentative approval to rename the city’s main library after former President Barack Obama.

Final approval and a public hearing are schedule for April 19. If the St. Petersburg City Council gives its final approval, the library, 3745 9th Ave. N, will be known as the President Barack Obama Main Community Library.

In February, St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman announced the proposed name change along with about $6 million in renovations that will be paid for with Penny for Pinellas monies. (Click here for related story.)

“Highlighting Barack Obama’s extraordinary story and history-making presidency in this way will inspire generations of young people in St. Pete and will complement the city buildings and other amenities that bear the name of local trailblazers,” Kriseman said. “I am looking forward to unveiling the name change and cutting the ribbon on what will prove to be an exciting and innovative hub for learning in our city.”

Projects in the library upgrade include:

42 parking spaces
complete fire sprinkler system
ADA-compliant restrooms
rear patio renovation & outdoor gathering space
reconfiguration of interior spaces with new programming areas
