Barack Obama Elementary School

Maple Heights, OH

This new school in Mayfield, Ohio was among 3 in the district to be opened in 2012. When it came time to name the new schools, the school board held an essay contest.

Over 500 essays were received, and Freshman Bennie Motley's essay was selected.  He selected the names Lincoln, Kennedy and Obama. From Bennie's essay:

"The Office of the President of the United States is the highest office in the country ... we should want to inspire students through the names of the schools to believe they can reach any goal in life."

A community forum was held for further input on the names and the names were approved.

Maple Heights is a community east of Cleveland in Ohio. The naming of this school is a fine example of community involvement and an inspiration to all.
