Avinguda Barack Obama

Valencia, Spain

The town of Naquera decided to name this street in honor of Barack Obama in 2008. The leaders of the town in the Valencian Community cited Obama's influence as an "icon of multiculturalism" as their reasoning for renaming this street. Previously, it had been named after Jose Antonio Primo de Rivera, who was the son of the Spanish dictator Miguel Primo de Rivera. In Spanish history, the younger Rivera is remembered as the founder of the fascist politcal party Falange, which was formed in 1937 after the Spanish Civil War. The party was dissolved in 1977. The Avinguda Barack Obama is now the permanent name of the street.
